Why were there so many conspiracies and mysteries surrounding da Vinci?

I know people thought he was gay and that he wrote in code so that his work would not be discovered etc, but why? If everyone though he was perfect; handsome, friendly, brilliant, talented at everything; then why were there so many conspiracy theories? Also, if you know of any other mysteries or conspiracies or secrets, could you let me know that also? thanks:]
